G9: Power System Planning

Power system planning is the process of deciding on the system components to be installed or upgraded in order to satisfy the electric demand of the future. It involves answering the following questions:

  • What to install, equipment and specifications
  • Where to install, location
  • How to install, interconnection
  • When to install, time horizon

Because planning for the power system is very complex, it is traditionally divided into three broad categories:

  • Generation Planning
  • Transmission Planning
  • Distribution Planning

This course covers those three categories of power system planning. In addition to the conventional aspects of planning, the issues concerning planning of renewable energy sources and planning of microgrids are also covered.
